The Best Wines for Mother’s Day
By Marie Gorbenko Published April 2022
With Mother’s Day right around the corner, many of us are on the hunt for that special gift for mom that we know she’ll love. But let’s face it, we all know what mom really wants is a nice bottle of wine. Instead of trinkets that get shelved, or flowers that wilt, gift something sip-worthy that will be enjoyed and show your admiration. So, wondering which wine is best for mom? We’ve got you covered with our Mother’s Day wine guide to help celebrate any special woman in your life.
For the Mom Who Likes Sweet Wine:
Carl Graff Mosel Riesling
When sweet white wine comes to mind, riesling is usually at the top of the list. Lightly sweet, with notes of crisp yellow and green apples, and a lively, mouthwatering finish, Graff Mosel Riesling provides a refreshingly fragrant bouquet and a mouthwatering finish. It goes well with salads, light seafood and spicy cuisine. And while rieslings are extraordinarily versatile with food, this wonderfully priced introduction to high-quality German riesling can function beautifully on its own or as an aperitif to help toast to your mom.
Giorgi Costarosa Sangue di Giuda
Costarosa is a sweet, slightly effervescent (frizzante) Italian red wine. A dead ringer for a blueberry and blackberry fruit wine, we often recommend this wine to folks looking for semi-sweet reds. With delicate aromas of fresh picked strawberries, it offers a balanced sweetness. If red isn’t your mom’s go-to, opt for this white or rosé option.
For the Mom Who Likes Dry Wine:
Hayes Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon
Known as the king of red wine grapes, cabernet sauvignon enjoys the same regal status in California as it does in its native home in Bordeaux, France. Some of the most expensive wines in the USA are made from this noble grape, but don't let this scare you away, our Sourced & Certified Hayes Ranch Cabernet is as affordable as it is delicious. This wine features dark fruit flavors of blackcurrant, black cherry, blackberry and is super food friendly, pairing well with grilled red meat, pizza and pasta. We recommend gifting this bottle with a homecooked pasta dish (made with love) to add a special touch. Want to gift her a few different varietals? Check out the full Hayes Ranch wine collection.
For the Health-Conscious Mom:
Bonterra Sauvignon Blanc
Are you gifting for the mom into all things organic? Then look no further. Bonterra has been farming their wines organically since 1987. This sauvignon blanc is made from organic grapes with no artificial additives or pesticides, Bonterra is both sustainably farmed and climate neutral. With aromas of grapefruit and citrus alongside flavors of lime zest, melon, gooseberry and honey - this refreshing sauv blanc is an excellent accompaniment to a wide array of vegetarian food, for a truly fresh Mother’s Day meal.
For the Beachy Mom:
La Baume Rosé
This heavenly rosé hails from the heart of Languedoc-Roussillon, a true haven of tranquility that embodies the warmth of the South—much like mom’s favorite surfside hangout. For more than a century, Domaine de la Baume has been carrying on a viticultural tradition and producing enchanting wines with strong aromatic potential. With expressive, fruity notes of peach, blackcurrant and citrus, this fresh and well-balanced rosé is perfect for a picnic at the beach. So, pack the goodies, wine glasses and lead your mom to a beachy celebration with La Baume.
For the Foodie Mom:
Selvapiana Chianti Rufina DOCG
The most popular wine in Italy, chianti is emblematic of what Italy means to the world of wine. And since Italians believe that food and wine go together like two peas in a pod, this dry red wine is a lovely option for the mom who loves her classic Italian cuisine such as pizza and pasta, pork and beef and all manner of cheeses. Selvapiana’s versatility and high acidity allows it to be eaten with a wide range of foods, making this perfumed and elegant red a dream for any foodie mom.
For the Cool Mom:
19 Crimes Cali Red & 19 Crimes Martha's Chard
Why bring home 19 Crimes? Because she’s not a regular mom - she’s a cool mom who may enjoy baking bread while listening to 90’s rap. With wines featuring West Coast hip-hop icon, Snoop Dogg, and the diva of domesticity, Martha Stewart; this radical wine line has a criminal record for every bottle. For a nicely balanced and easy to drink red blend, try Snoop Dogg's 19 Crimes Cali Red. For a crisp California chardonnay with a refreshing finish, 19 Crimes Martha's Chard is criminally good.
