| Welcome to Notes from Wine Country – the ABC Fine Wine & Spirits ‘blog’! Here you’ll find weekly (sometimes more frequently) posts with highlights from our wine experts’ trips, spectacular new wines, exciting new spirits and craft beers, trends in the field, discussions of new products and more (not all in one post, of course). Look for new posts every Monday.
It’s the end of the travel season for us, so over the next few weeks we’ll be playing catch-up, filling you in on our spring and summer travels, including some interesting wine suggestions.
Feel free to post comments – comments will be moderated for language, etc. However, even if you disagree with us, we’ll still post your comment, as long as it’s polite. Please follow standard comment courtesy. You can ask questions, suggest topics for discussion, and treat us to your experiences in wine country as well. Questions on product availability and similar subjects should still be directed to our Ask Brad forum – the Notes blog isn’t replacing that. |

| I am looking for a source for single-grape wines for the five Bordeaux reds (Cabernet franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Verdot, and Malbec). Does ABC have these? Thanks.

Mike |

| Hi, Mike: There are very few estates in Bordeaux who do not blend at least two of these varieties, so your choices are much better if you travel outside of the Bordeaux area. You may find a few wines from Pomerol or St. Emilion which will use only Merlot, this is often the case with the ‘garagiste’, or garage wines, where the yields and production are miniscule. La Gomerie, from Ch. Beausejour-Becot is one example. The Loire Valley, due north from Bordeaux, offers many excellent reds from the Cabernet Franc variety. Look for Chinon, Bourgueil and some Anjou rouge. ABC offers wines from Ch. la Roulerie and Domaine des Roches Neuves. Cabernet Franc can also be found in California and on Long Island, in New York. Your best bet for 100% Merlot or 100% Cabernet Sauvignon would be nearly anywhere these varietals are grown except Bordeaux, and a little research on the internet could help you find the non-blended wines. Australia, California, Washington State, Chile, Argentina etc. Petit Verdot is a bit harder to find, although ABC does carry one from Murphy-Goode in Sonoma, California. Malbec can be found quite easily. Southeast from Bordeaux, the city of Cahors is well known for their tannic red wines made from the Malbec, although not always 100%. Argentina has built a solid reputation almost solely around the Malbec, and the best examples come from the Mendoza region. -- Shayne Hebert, ABC |
