Thinking about game day?
Notes from Wine Country By Lorena on 12/31/2009
You’ve got plans. Big ones. Mostly revolving around a bunch of big guys trying to take each other down (or avoid being taken) before the goal line.

At the risk of sounding overly traditional, you need beer.

And food, of course, but we’ll get to that in a minute.

You probably have a list. But why not mix it up a little? Make one of your new year’s resolutions be to try something new every day (in this case, beer). If you generally drink American premium beers, try a microbrew. Try a wheat beer, or an ale (if you usually drink lighter lager style beers, you probably don’t want to jump right in to an oatmeal stout, by the way. Take your time exploring this new territory.).

Don't forget the bubbly
Notes from Wine Country By Lorena on 12/30/2009
What would the holidays be without Champagne? It’s the quintessential toasting wine, it goes with most if not all foods, and it can’t help but be festive!

Of course, as a rule, when we say “Champagne,” we really mean “sparkling wine.” After all, just because it sparkles, doesn’t necessarily make it Champagne. Strictly speaking, Champagne comes only from the Champagne region of

New Year's Eve: hors d'oeuvres
Notes from Wine Country By Lorena on 12/29/2009

Want to go all out, without going all out? Or without resorting to just raiding the grocery store deli and freezer cases (not that that’s a bad idea, mind you)? There’s just one important thing to remember when figuring the food list for your NYE party: if you aren’t catering, turning it over to your household staff, or bringing in a gourmet chef, it’s going to be up to you and anyone you can get to help. That means simple goes a long way. NYE isn’t a food holiday, not in the way that many other holidays are, so while you want to make sure your guests are well-fed (especially if you’re serving alcohol), it’s probably not worth spending your day (and likely part of your evening) in the kitchen. A little creativity can turn the simplest of foods into gourmet tastes, or you can even skip that and go really simple.

What are you doing New Year's Eve?
Notes from Wine Country By Lorena on 12/28/2009
If you haven’t already planned your New Year’s Eve bash to the last dotted “i” on the invitations, but just decided to have a few friends over (or even celebrate at home), here are some easy-as-ABC party ideas.

A New Year’s Eve party can be anything from a formal blow-out affair (get the Champagne by the case and throw it on ice—nothing is as necessary!) to hanging out and watching movies until midnight. But what do you drink (or eat) while watching the ball drop on Times Square, or whatever your NYE tradition is?

Finger food. Hors d’oeuvres. Whatever won& ...

Spirited gifts
Notes from Wine Country By Lorena on 12/23/2009
Gift giving in the wine and spirits world is pretty easy, at least if you know specifically (or even generally) what the recipient drinks.

Once you know that, you have one basic decision to make: do I give them what they like, or do I up the ante by moving up a shelf? In other words, if Dad drinks Jack Daniel’s, do I give him a bottle (or gift set) of Jack, or do I give him a bottle of Single Barrel? If Mom prefers Absolut, do I give her that, or do I go with Pravda?

Keep in mind that often spirits drinkers don’t mind moving up in a category, but they may have specific tastes that make an upward move challenging. If your best friend is a Dewar’s drinker, buying a $50 single malt isn’t necessarily a good idea—either buy the Dewar’s, or a great bottle of another blended whisky, because your friend may prefer the blended whisky style ov ...

Sparkling alternatives
Notes from Wine Country By Lorena on 12/23/2009
Looking for the perfect celebratory bubbly for the holidays? After the stress of holiday shopping is over with, sit back and relax with a glass of Spanish cava!

Cava is Spanish champagne made like traditional champagne. It is enjoyed best when it is served very cold.

Cava is a part of Spain’s many holiday traditions. In Spain, people generally celebrate well into the New Year with Three Kings' Day on January 6th. A glass of cava is common on Christmas Eve after a big feast. Cava will usually accompany Spanish desserts, such as turrón, a sweet almond candy, and polvorones, almond cookies.

Holiday wine ideas
Notes from Wine Country By Lorena on 11/24/2009
Another holiday season is upon us, and with it the traditional gatherings of friends and family for dinner and parties. For many of us, the hardest decision we’ll make is which wine to serve—after all, we do not want to disappoint our guests with our choice—and have them talk about it forever after! To help, here are some suggestions, to give you an idea of what to buy no matter what your budget.

First, don’t judge a wine by the price; it is the pairing of quality and selection of foods that your guests will notice and appreciate. Granted, more expensive wines are likely to be more enjoyable because of the care that’s gone into the crafting, but what is it we remember most about the wine? Usually the company—and the occasion—we enjoy it with.
